Fresh off of the wildly successful hosting of Saturday Night Live by octogenarian actress, Betty White, SNL producers have announced they are slating a slew of other senior Hollywood stars as future hosts.

First up will be Susan Sarandon. “She’s eighty, right?” said SNL executive producer and creator, Lorne Michaels. “If she’s not she should be. Woman looks like she’s been botoxed in reverse. We’re also talking to Angela Lansbury if that falls through.”

When asked why the live sketch comedy program is shifting gears to older established entertainers as guest hosts, especially those close to death, Michaels said, “Well, you saw with Ms. White how easy it was to draw laughs during the sketches. Normally, our over-reliance on gross-out jokes or lewd comments fall flat, and even verge on being downright awkward and uncomfortable at times. But I think you saw in that episode that – at least when recited by an old woman – female genitalia euphemisms, generational incest, and the word ‘lesbian’ are suddenly funny. The writers didn’t have to work at all.”

Michaels was referring to several skits in White’s episode that included double-entendre jokes featuring women’s vaginas and lesbianism, and a scene where Ms. White’s grandson proposes marriage and she agrees. When asked how she felt about the scenes in which she appeared, Ms. White responded, “Ugh. There was a reason I was so reluctant to go on that show. I must have lost my sanity. I think I said the word ‘lesbian’ or ‘muffin’ a thousand times. I just thought I’d be in a skit with the Samurai Swordsman, or something – what? He’s DEAD??”

Michaels doesn’t dispute that Ms. White was annoyed during rehearsals. “At one point she gave me the middle finger and told me to go eff myself … SEEEE! You laughed!!”

Michaels claims that the possibilities of older hosts speaking with vulgarity are limitless. “There is no shortage of ancient entertainers desperate for attention who would like one more shot at some headlines … or at least headlines that aren’t attached to an embarrassing illness or an obituary. In fact, we’ve already locked up Barbara Streisand for next season, if she makes it. I hear she has an absolutely filthy mouth.”

However, not everyone is thrilled by SNL’s planned exploitation of the Hollywood’s senior citizens. “It’s a disgrace,” said long-time actor, Andy Griffith, which was all he could muster before falling asleep in his interview chair.  And Cybill Shepherd, who despite being only 60 has the spotted loose-skinned neck of an 80-year old, was equally appalled, but for different reasons. “You know, I was available. Watch this: ‘Lesbian. Vagina.’ See? I could have been hilarious.”

Despite the controversy, recently created Twitter accounts suggest some aged actors are eager to follow in White’s footsteps, whose selection for the show was preceded by Facebook groups entreating SNL to enlist her as a guest host. For instance, “The Partridge Family” matron, Shirley Jones, yesterday Tweeted an unprintable Andrew Dice Clay-esque diatribe, and Vivian Smallwood (aka, the Rapping Granny – and yes, she is miraculously still alive) Tweeted a lyric from lewd 80′s rap group, 2 Live Crew, showing that she not only still possesses the urban chops that made her famous, but that she also isn’t afraid to viciously degrade women.

Not all attempts to garner the attention of SNL through social media outlets went as well, however. For some, it was ed_asner_2185829clear that it was their first foray into internet-based communications. This was the case for Danny Glover, whose Tweet read, “asdf asdf testing testing asdf asdf.” For others, it appeared they simply believed they were supposed to type exactly what they were thinking. Take for instance Ed Asner, whose Facebook status update read “I AM typing you stupid SOB! I know exactly what I’m doing now shut the [unprintable] up before I crack your Jew-boy skull with my Emmy … Dammit , how did I get stuck with this sniveling kike as my agent.” The Jewish Anti-Defamation League issued a statement condemning the post, but then retracted when they learned Asner is Jewish.

While SNL appears committed to the new direction, some industry watchers are not convinced it will work. “Did you watch the episode? I didn’t make it past the first skit before I threw up in my mouth a little bit,” said David Newbaum, writer for Entertainment Weekly. “I have a feeling, now that the novelty has worn off — heh heh, funny to say ‘novelty’ when referring to Betty White — anyway, now that it’s worn off, I think the reaction of most viewers — at least those older than twelve or not residing in fraternity houses — will be limited to rolling eyes and clicking remotes. Anything more than that, and I fear for the future of our country.”
